CHENNAI: Press 1 for boy, 2 for girl, followed by the date of birth. While the mother enters the baby’s weight from a remote village in Madhya Pradesh as part of her weekly update on the child’s nutrition, a server in Chennai processes the data. If there is drastic weight loss, the system sends out SMS alerts to healthcare officials who get medical assistance for the infant.
The Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB) will be introducing an SMS facility for consumers to lodge complaints.
Consumers will be able to register complaints through text messages and get acknowledgements, after registering their mobile numbers with the local Metrowater depots.
Rehabilitation of the tsunami-affected people is an ambitious project of the DMK-led government in the state. A year ago, 2,000-odd asbestos-roofed temporary shelters were built off the Marina coast, to relocate families affected by the 2004 tsunami. Now, the plan is to pull down existing residential blocks of the Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board along the Marina and build stilt-plus-four’ buildings to house the tsunami-affected as well as the slum dwellers.
