Delhi will be sporting a bit of Barcelona, Paris and Helsinki soon, as the Delhi Development Authority’s (DDA) new initiative to rope in experts from international cities in urban planning for redevelopment of the capital is set to start with the MoU with Barcelona, Spain.

The capital’s tryst with the Metro, a first for the country, is a model which is being emulated to build Metro systems in other cities now.

The Delhi government got a shot in the arm on Monday as the Delhi High Court supported its decision to phase out Bluelines in public interest, asserting that the government had the power to do so. When bus operators pleaded about losing their livelihood, the court silenced them by asking how the families of Blueline victims were surviving.

After completion of Phase II of construction by the end of this month, Delhi Metro network will cover an impressive 190km in the capital. But those who haven’t been included in the Metro map needn’t worry. With two more phases already in the pipeline, the Metro masterplan for 2021 envisages bringing the Metro within half a kilometre reach of every Delhiite.
