Renuka dam project runs into green hurdle

In what is a huge set back for the capital’s water supply, the Renuka Dam project that is to supply Delhi with 275 million gallons per day (MGD) of water has been denied clearance by the ministry of environment and forests due to the large-scale deforestation that the project would require.

The popular perception of Delhi being a lawless city seems to have taken a U-turn during the Commonwealth Games, at least as far as the traffic situation is concerned. Chief minister Sheila Dikshit has favoured strict penalties for traffic violations in the capital such as the one of Rs 2,000 that was prescribed for vehicles straying into the Commonwealth Games lanes.

It was the final Games test for cops and they passed it with flying colours. To make sure the security for closing ceremony, which was attended by who’s who of India as well as over 65000 spectators, is foolproof, Delhi Police and several other security agencies made elaborate plans.
