World universities present urban plans for a better Jakarta

Architecture students from around the world gathered at the University of Indonesia (UI) in Depok, West Java, to present their plans to redesign the city of Jakarta on Thursday.

Aside from UI’s department of architecture, representatives from the University of Michigan and the University of Hong Kong also presented their ideas for a better Jakarta.

The presentations, titled “Jakarta: Designing for Hypercomplexity” included ideas on housing, recreation, transportation, office planning and access to clean water.

The presentations were attended by student observers, academics and architects, and were part of a continuing series of research workshops that began on May 28 at UI’s campus in Depok.

“This is a great example of cooperation. Together, we are mapping out the complexities of the problems that Jakarta faces, especially when it comes to access to clean water,” said Herlily, who is the secretary of UI’s department of architecture, as quoted by kompas.com.
